GPA & CGPA Basics
4 questions
GPA stands for Grade Point Average. At SRM University, it measures how well you performed in a single semester. It is calculated on a scale of 0 to 10 — where 10 is the highest possible score. For example, if you scored O grade (10 points) in all your subjects for a semester, your GPA would be 10.0. The higher your GPA, the better your semester performance. Most students aim for a GPA of 8.0 or above, which is considered very good at SRM.
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. While GPA measures only one semester, CGPA measures your overall academic performance across all the semesters you have completed so far. Think of it this way — GPA is your score for one chapter, while CGPA is your score for the entire book. CGPA is what companies look at during campus placements, and it is what gets printed on your final degree certificate.
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) and GPA are used interchangeably at SRM University — they both mean the same thing. Both refer to the grade point average for a single semester. Some SRM documents use "SGPA" and some use "GPA", but the calculation formula and meaning are identical. Our calculator supports both terms.
SRM University uses a 10-point scale, not the 4.0 scale used in the USA. So your GPA or CGPA at SRM will always be a number between 0 and 10. When applying for foreign universities or jobs that ask for a 4.0 scale GPA, you typically divide your CGPA by 10 and multiply by 4. For example, a 8.5 CGPA at SRM ≈ 3.4 on a 4.0 scale. Always check the specific conversion method required by the institution you are applying to.

How Calculations Work

SRM uses a weighted average formula. First, for each subject, multiply the Grade Points you earned by the Credit hours of that subject — this gives you Grade Points for that subject. Then add up all Grade Points across all subjects. Finally, divide that total by the sum of all Credits. The formula is: GPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Sum of (Total Credits). For example — if you have 3 subjects: Maths (A=8 grade, 4 credits), Physics (O=10 grade, 3 credits), and English (B+=7 grade, 2 credits) — GPA = (8×4 + 10×3 + 7×2) ÷ (4+3+2) = (32+30+14) ÷ 9 = 76 ÷ 9 = 8.44.
CGPA is calculated by taking a weighted average of all your semester GPAs, where the weight is the number of credits in each semester. The formula is: CGPA = Sum of (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) ÷ Sum of (All Semester Credits). For example, if Semester 1 had GPA 8.2 with 22 credits, Semester 2 had GPA 7.8 with 24 credits, and Semester 3 had GPA 8.5 with 23 credits — CGPA = (8.2×22 + 7.8×24 + 8.5×23) ÷ (22+24+23) = (180.4 + 187.2 + 195.5) ÷ 69 = 563.1 ÷ 69 = 8.16.
SRM University uses this official formula: Percentage = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5. So if your CGPA is 8.0, your percentage = (8.0 × 10) − 7.5 = 80 − 7.5 = 72.5%. If your CGPA is 9.0, percentage = 90 − 7.5 = 82.5%. Note: Some faculties and companies may use the simpler formula Percentage = CGPA × 10, which gives a slightly higher number. Always confirm which formula the institution requires before submitting your documents.
SRM University uses a letter grading system with the following grade points: O (Outstanding) = 10 points for marks 91–100, A+ (Excellent) = 9 points for marks 81–90, A (Very Good) = 8 points for marks 71–80, B+ (Good) = 7 points for marks 61–70, B (Above Average) = 6 points for marks 51–60, C (Average) = 5 points for marks 45–50, and F (Fail) = 0 points for marks below 45. There is also "Ab" (Absent) which is treated as 0 points.

Yes, our calculator supports both the 2018 and 2021 regulations of SRM University. The core grading scale (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, F) and grade points remain the same in both regulations. However, individual subject credit values may differ between the two regulations depending on your branch. For best accuracy, always cross-check the credit values for your specific subjects with your official timetable or SRM Academia portal.

CGPA & Placements

The minimum CGPA requirement varies by company: Mass recruiters like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, and Capgemini typically require 6.0 to 6.5 CGPA. Mid-tier product and service companies usually require 7.0 to 7.5 CGPA. Top product companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and startups often require 8.0+ CGPA or have no cutoff but expect strong coding skills. Government PSU jobs often require 60% aggregate, which roughly equals 7.5+ CGPA at SRM. Remember — CGPA is just one criterion. Aptitude test scores, coding skills, communication, and projects also matter greatly.
No, a low CGPA does not mean you cannot get placed. Many students with 6.5–7.5 CGPA get placed in good companies by focusing on skills, certifications, internships, and projects. However, some companies do have hard cutoffs, so you may be filtered out of those specific drives. If your CGPA is low, focus on building strong technical skills, working on real projects, getting internships, and earning certifications in areas like Cloud, Cybersecurity, Data Science, or Full Stack Development. Skills can often compensate for a lower CGPA in the eyes of many modern tech companies.
The impact depends on how many semesters you have already completed. In your 1st semester, your GPA is 100% of your CGPA since there is no prior history. By the 4th semester, one semester is roughly 25% of your CGPA. By the 8th semester, one semester is about 12.5%. This means if your CGPA is low in early semesters, it is harder (but not impossible) to recover. If you are in 5th semester with a 7.0 CGPA, scoring 9.5 in one semester can raise it only by about 0.3–0.4 points. So start focusing on grades early — improvement is always possible but takes multiple semesters of consistent effort.
📐 Quick Formula Reference
GPA = Σ(GP × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits
CGPA = Σ(GPA × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits
% = (CGPA × 10) − 7.5
🎓 SRM Grade Points
O 91–100 10 pts
A+ 81–90 9 pts
A 71–80 8 pts
B+ 61–70 7 pts
B 51–60 6 pts
C 45–50 5 pts
F Below 45 0 pts
💡 Pro Tip

Maintain 90%+ attendance and score above 35/50 in both Cycle Tests — this guarantees you near-full internal marks (38–40/40), which significantly boosts your final grade.
